Vietnam’s Baseball Club Championship Open Only to Local Players

This annual professional tournament aims to promote baseball and discover potential talent within the national and local teams. The 2023 edition, scheduled from July 26 to 30 in Hanoi, includes several significant changes compared to the previous year.

In an effort to enhance competition, the organizer has expanded the number of participating baseball clubs from eight to eleven. However, international players will not be allowed to participate in this year’s championship.

During a press briefing, VBSF chairman Tran Duc Phan acknowledged that baseball is a less popular sport in Vietnam. He explained that in the 2022 edition, foreign players were permitted to join the competition to add diversity and enhance the level of play. However, this year’s edition will solely feature Vietnamese players.

While these changes may impact the appeal and skill level of the tournament, Chairman Phan believes they will provide an opportunity for domestic players to improve and showcase their abilities. He further stated that the VBSF plans to organize a separate competition for international players in the future.

Once Vietnamese baseball players have further honed their skills, the VBSF will explore the possibility of allowing clubs to sign both domestic and international players to compete against each other.

Additionally, the VBSF faces obstacles in promoting baseball in Vietnam, including a lack of suitable land for baseball fields and a limited number of coaches and referees. To overcome these challenges, the federation has sought assistance from referee teams in South Korea and Japan, who have provided substantial support.
